Bu arada adeta bir ruh gibi süzülerek ilerleyen sevgilisi Meliha'yı görür, peşine takılır ve uçurumdan düşerek bayılır. Uyandığında başucunda ihtiyar bir adam görür... Rivayete göre felsefe taşını ve ölümsüzlüğün sırrını bulan Sen Jermen Kontu, Sultan I. Mahmut zamanında gizlice İstanbul'a gelir ve bu sırrı birine öğreterek tekrar sırra kadem basar. Böylece yüzyıllardır insanların hayatlarını birtakım doğaüstü tekniklerle kendi vücutlarına aktararak yaşamlarını sürdüren Canvermezler ortaya çıkar. Toplumdan uzak ve gezgin yaşayan Canvermezler'i tanıyıp da hayatta kalan kimse yoktur. Tek istisnası, başından geçenleri insanlığı uyarmak için miras bırakan Ali Nail'dir. Ancak yaşayan kendisi midir yoksa hayaleti midir, burası meçhuldür. Selim Nüzhet Gerçek'in Ahmet Kamil müstearıyla, Claude Farrere'in La Maison des Hommes Vivants adlı eserinden uyarlayarak 1921 yılında İleri gazetesinde yayımladıktan sonra 1922'de kitaplaştırdığı Canvermezler Tekkesi, esrarengiz olayları, doğaüstü karakterleri ve okura yaşattığı mistik ürpertilerle edebiyatımızın ilk gotik romanı olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Selim Nüzhet Gerçek (1891-1945) Gazeteci, yayıncı ve eğitimci Mahmut Celalettin Bey'in oğlu ve Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar'ın kardeşi olan Selim Nüzhet, İstanbul'da doğdu. İlkokulu Rumelihisarı'ndaki Gaziosmanpaşa İptidai Mektebi'nde okuduktan sonra Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultanisi Türkçe bölümünden mezun oldu (1910). İsviçre'de Cenevre Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi'ni bitirdi. I. Dünya Savaşı'nın başlaması dolayısıyla 1921'e kadar yurda dönemedi. Bu sürede Fransa, İngiltere ve İtalya'dan sınır dışı edilen Türklerle ilgilendi. Yurda döndükten sonra Yarın mecmuası ile İleri gazetesinde çevirmenlik yaparak yazılar yazmaya, romanlar tefrika etmeye başladı. Bir süreliğine Darülbedayi'de oyunlar sahneye koymakla görevlendirildi. Cumhuriyet'in ilanından sonra gazeteciliği bırakarak Robert Kolej'de on yıl kadar Türkçe ve tarih öğretmenliği yaptı. Atatürk'ün emriyle 1934'te kurulan Basma Yazı ve Resimleri Derleme Müdürlüğü'ne atandı ve vefatına kadar burada çalıştı. İstanbul İtfaiye Teşkilatı'nı kuran Gerçek Davut Ağa'ya sempatisi dolayısıyla Gerçek soyadını alan Selim Nüzhet, Milliyet, Yeni Türk Mecmuası, Cumhuriyet, Yedigün, Yücel, Perde ve Sahne, Akşam, İstanbul ve Ulus gibi çeşitli gazete ve dergilerde yazılar yazdı. Bunun yanında Türk matbaacılık tarihi, tiyatro tarihi, gazetecilik tarihi, Türkiye Bibliyografyası üzerine araştırmalar yapıp eserler kaleme alan Selim Nüzhet, Canvermezler Tekkesi, Gazanfer Paşa'nın Bir İkincisi ve Meçhul Kuvvetlere Kurban adında üç de roman yazdı.
